When it comes to Mexican food, you can't fool me.

When I'm not selling or collecting comic books, I work at a large grocery chain here in San Antonio.  I know the products there pretty well. San Antonio also has some of the best Mexican eateries around. Except for one place. I'm not going to name this place, but after eating there, it was apparent that the owners shopped at my grocery store.
My friend Robert told me about this place about a year ago.  His family knew the owners, and were regular patrons there. I thought if they like it I'm pretty sure I will.  Right away, I knew something was fishy.  I was there for lunch, and on their menu was a plate called Un poquito de todo (a little of everything).  A plate identical in contents and name of a menu item at the legendary Malt House in westside San Antonio.  Only, this plate was a cheap imitation.  The beans came out of a bag. The taquitos were the same ones I had in my freezer. The tortillas were store bought. The salsa was Pace picante. The chile con carne came from a can. An 8 plate at this place I could easily make at home.  it was not good.  I bit my tongue so I wasn't a mood killer around my friend Robert.  I was just amazed how lazy a restaurant could be trying to fool people into thinking the food that comes out of their kitchen is fresh. Even their dessert pies came from my store.  Im not the only one who has noticed this. So, if you are looking for real and fresh Mexican food, google it.  There are alot of pretenders out there.  But there are some amazing places as well. I will give you onecworth trying if you are in town.  The Arizona Cafe on General McMullen and Castroville road.  Amazing place.
The place I mentioned earlier called The Malt House is a San Antonio institution.  Excellent food at really low prices. For real.  You will not believe the prices. Their best items are their large fried chicken, hamburgers,  onion rings, crispy dogs (hotdogs deep fried in a corn tortilla), and a killer shrimp plate.  I also like another San Antonio institution called The
Golden Star.  Great Chinese food, but I have been going there since I was 3 for one entrée.  Fried fish with brown gravy. It is amazing.   That is all I ever order from there.  I have not tried anything else from there.  It is that good.  Its my usual. Make it yours too.
